We've decided to use the same quality Mexican amber we're known for to bring something new and fresh to the scene. We've created some beautifully sculptural carved Mayan flared amber plugs with material sourced from the Chiapas (Simojovel) region of Mexico.

These pieces are virtually clear of inclusions and seams and are a very clean, vibrant golden color. If you are interested in pieces with organic inclusions and different coloration, check the Amber material section. The style is that of the traditional "Mayan" style ear adornments with a front flare considerably larger than the saddle. These have a standard sized rear flare. Amber is bought and sold by the gram, and thus these are priced at the size of the front flare and not the saddle, to accommodate for the extra material involved in creating this design.

Approximate sizing for these pieces is as follows:

  • 2g/6.5mm has 13mm face
  • 0g/8.2mm has 14mm face
  • 00g/9.2mm has 15.5mm face
  • 1/2"/12.7mm has 18mm face
  • 5/8"/15.7mm has 22mm face
  • 3/4"/19mm has 25.5mm face
  • 7/8"/22.2mm has a 28.5mm face
  • 1"/25.4mm has a 32mm face (1 set in stock, 8mm wearing surface)

Amber develops an immense amount of static electricity while being worked or by simply rubbing it against cloth. The ancient Maya believed that amber thus had magical properties and used it for protection and ritual. They established mining techniques and traded this "gemstone of the sun" amongst themselves and other outlying cultures. The age of the material used for these sets of plugs based on general scientific evidence about the amber of this region is approximately 22 million to 26 million years.

Unfortunately due to labor and material costs we cannot offer customer discounts on this item.
